Diaper Rash? No More!

Tender Defender for Baby. Diaper Rash.Tender Defender was crafted for babies, specifically for diaper rash! Babies are our mission. Everything about the formulation was created with babies’ most sensitive skin in mind: the level of concentration of the aloe gel, the non-photosensitizing oils, the combination of essential oils, and the overall cloth diaper-safe formulation.

What makes Tender Defender so special? It’s part of a patent pending new approach to diaper rash treatment. Tender Defender contains botanical sources of essential fatty acids such as omega-3 and omega-6 that human bodies cannot produce for themselves but are absolutely necessary for skin to heal itself. For the mildest diaper rash, Tender Defender can be used on its own. For moderate to severe diaper rash, it is used beneath barrier creams to supply skin with the botanical nutrients it needs to support healing. The barrier cream is applied after Tender Defender has dried completely. The combination of the Tender Defender base coat and barrier cream top coat gives skin the nutrients it needs and protects from further environmental irritation.

Diaper rash is the primary use for Tender Defender on babies. But parents have also also found it useful for: dry skin, cradle cap or other forms of seborrhea, heat rash, baby acne, eczema, intertrigo and teething rash, chafing, contact dermatitis, and other skin issues.*

Your product was recommended to me by Stephanie M. who owns our local cloth diaper store. My daughter had a diaper rash for about a week and a half, and we were going to take her to the doctor if something didn’t help. My husband got it on Friday from the store and we started using it, along with the same diaper rash cream we’d been using. By Friday night, I had decided I was going to take her to the doctor Saturday morning. When she woke up on Saturday and I went to change her, her rash was almost gone, and by Saturday evening, there was no sign of it. My husband and I are super impressed and will be telling everyone about Tender Defender. Thanks for making such a great product! –Lisa K.

My little one has very sensitive skin and is prone to occasional, sometime severe, diaper rash. Nothing has worked as well as this does bringing her quick and complete rash relief. –Angela I.

Tender Defender is better than a pain patch! My husband is bedridden and has a lot of sores on his bottom. Tender Defender has made it so much better that he doesn’t need his pain patch for those anymore. Thank you! –H.

I got this as part of the beta [testing] program, and we used used it on my 3 year old’s chronic eczema, for which the doctor had prescribed steroids. It turned his skin from scabby to clear over the period of a week. Great stuff! –David G.

This product is amazing! I was sick for a week and my nose was red and in pain. I tried everything, Vaseline, lotions, even chapstick but my nose was still scaly and killing me. As soon as I tried the Tender Defender my nose started to feel better. It was so soothing and within a day my bright red nose was healing. I no longer have a red nose but I’m still using the gel to keep my elbows smooth. It’s fantastic! –Lindsay P.

This product is amazing on the itchy, reddened patches on my hands. I am getting a rapid response to using it just like you would for a baby with diaper rash. I put it on and let it dry, then use the cream I got from the doctor. Finally, some relief! –Emma D.

I had this weird allergic reaction to a mango – apparently the skin of a mango has the same oil as poison ivy. My face and lips are now super itchy and nice and swollen. I put Tender Defender on it and it stopped itching and feels great now!!!!!!!!!! I’m not even going to take more Benadryl b/c it’s messing with my milk supply and the TD feels so good. –Lauren L.

I had an allergic reaction to my fake nails so I applied Tender defender to help heal my sore hands. It worked great! It seems to help soothe and heal a variety of rashes, dry skin and even allergic reactions too. Great stuff! I need to purchase a case of it for summer bug bites and sunburns. My friends all use it too. Great product….a definite MUST!!! –G.G.

I used the product on a skin irration on my 12 year old. She had very irrated skin due to an over-use of bandaid/medical tape to keep an area covered and protected. She said it immediately soothed her discomfort. I put it on a bad sunburn on my neck. Again, I experienced immediate reflief. Great Stuff! –J.G.

Anyone who has ever had cold sores knows how painful they can be. I use Tender Defender on cold sores. It promotes healing and soothes the pain. My cold sore seemed to heal a lot faster than usual. I also use it after working in the garden, it’s great for sunburns, chapped or wind-burned skin. A little bit goes a long ways and I love the fresh herbal scent. It works great! Thanks Tender Defender! I couldn’t be without it! –Barbara M.

Used it for jock itch, and it did a great job! It was gone in a couple days. My wife uses it for her calluses and cracked dry feet. Keeps them from cracking. She rubs it in her hands. Keeps her hands nice and moist too. And she put it on two sores…on her feet, and Tender Defender took care of it. –B.

My grandson kept asking me to scratch his back. After about the third time, I applied Aloe Baby to his entire back. He never asked me to scratch it again as the itching was gone! –Beverly S.

This product is FANTASTIC! My daughter Emily broke her arm last month (she is 8 yrs old). Her cast was irritating her skin around the edge of the cast, almost wearing a blister in one spot. I put some Tender Defender on the area. It did not sting at all…she said it cooled the irritated area & made it feel better! The next day it looked less inflamed & was not as sore. I also put some on my hands, which are constantly dry, chapped, & often crack & bleed due to repeated daily handwashing. This soothed, smoothed & healed my hands better than anything else I have tried. Thank you for such a fabulous product! –Stacy R.

What is Tender Defender?
It is a botanical gel that is designed to support skin healing for babies suffering from diaper rash (patent pending). The organic, concentrated aloe-based formula is bio-active. It is infused with essential oils to support skin regeneration. As a diaper rash gel, it is applied directly to the baby’s bottom and allowed to air dry completely before caretakers apply a barrier cream, ointment, or paste. This gives the skin a nutritive layer of support as it heals.

Is Tender Defender only for babies?

Grandfather and baby

It is formulated for babies, but Tender Defender is also perfectly suited to older adults, whose skin biologically becomes more and more similar to babies’ as we mature.

We have had testers of all ages use Tender Defender for a variety of skin issues, and they have reported that it has been useful for supporting skin healing for:

  • Rashes associated with both fecal and urinary incontinence (adults)
  • Razor burn (adults and pets–due to grooming)
  • Irritation due to waxing, electrolysis, or epilation
  • Sunburn
  • First degree burns (after flushing with cold water)
  • Dry skin
  • Minor cuts
  • Abrasions
  • Chapped lips
  • Contact dermatitis
  • External hemorrhoids
We at Aloe Baby anticipate that Tender Defender would be helpful with supporting skin healing for: Tattoofresh tattoos, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, skin blisters, allergic reactions (including poison ivy, oak, or sumac), bed/pressure sores, biopsy sites, laser treatments, catheter sites, injection sites, diabetic ulcers, and other skin issues. Please let us know if you use Tender Defender for any of these (or other) purposes, and how it works for you!

Aloe Baby is developing products that will use our patent-pending technology for every age group and skin type, but Tender Defender always be our most gentle formula, so go ahead and get started with this one until a formula more suited to your skin type is ready!

I’m using Tender Defender on my child. Can we use it for anything besides diaper rash?

Mother and daughter

Of course! It is formulated to be gentle enough to use on your baby’s most sensitive skin, so it could certainly be used for many other things. Dry skin, cradle cap or other forms of seborrhea, heat rash, baby acne, eczema, intertrigo and teething rash, chafing, contact dermatitis, and other skin issues could all be candidates for the use of Tender Defender. A few words of caution, though. First, although Tender Defender’s ingredients are all food grade, it is for external use only, so avoid getting any in the eyes or ears or very much in the mouth. Second, when in doubt, ALWAYS consult your pediatrician or dermatologist. Only a qualified physician can tell you for certain what your baby is dealing with and whether there is a more serious underlying condition that may need special treatment.

Is Tender Defender safe to use on babies undergoing light therapy for jaundice?

Portrait of a yawning baby girlAbsolutely! (Dear caregiver, this is an excellent and very wise question! Thank you for asking it!) Tender Defender was designed with these very special babies in mind! Our formulation contains NO carrier oils or essential oils that are light sensitizing. If your baby is undergoing light therapy, make sure none of your skin care products contain citrus-based (or anise, bergamot, dill, angelica, fennel, rue, or cumin) essential oils or other components that may cause phototoxicity in conjunction with ultraviolet (UV) light.

Is Tender Defender safe for use with cloth diapers?

Yes, Tender Defender is cloth diaper safe with one caveat: make sure the surface of the skin is dry before you close up that diaper. By the time it air dries (and using a hair dryer on low air and COLD setting “counts” as air drying when you’re in a hurry), the amount of botanicals left on the surface of the skin is negligible.

Our cloth diaper users have expressed one issue: there aren’t very many barrier creams/pastes/ointments that are cloth diaper (CD) safe. But one of our moms routinely used liners, so her solution was to use those whenever baby’s bottom was red, irritated, or rashy and needed the protection of a barrier cream/ointment/paste to keep the diaper environment away from the skin.

Tender Defender used regularly by itself is a terrific way to keep skin from getting red and irritated. But if redness and irritation develops, we absolutely recommend the use of a barrier cream/ointment/paste until it recedes!

How often should we use Tender Defender?

Daddy and daughterWhen there is a rash present, use at every diaper change, or at least every second diaper change. Follow the directions carefully, especially the part about air drying completely.

When there is no rash present, use Tender Defender at least twice a day. Most importantly, watch the signs your baby’s body provides. Does redness or rash come back frequently? Perhaps you should use it at every diaper change.

If you are using Tender Defender for a non-diaper rash skin issue such as abrasions, sunburn, tattoo site, external hemorrhoids, or contact dermatitis, start out using it 3-5 times a day and adjust as necessary.

What does it feel like to apply Tender Defender on sensitive, damaged skin?

Ginger flowerFor most of us, it doesn’t feel like much of anything. But after lots of (humane) testing among children and adults, we can report that a few people with very sensitive or very damaged skin (such as fresh steam burns from cooking) may feel warm and tingly at the site where Tender Defender is applied. This quick heat is usually followed by a cooling sensation as the gel dries. The warmth and tingling is most likely due to the gingerols in the ginger essential oil, which scientists believe increase blood supply to the area to stimulate healing. (Read more about it in the Bio-Active section of the Tender Defender page.) Unless it is uncomfortable or is accompanied by a worsening of the condition, the warm, tingly sensation shouldn’t be problematic. It’s an indicator that the essential oils are doing their jobs!

Air drying takes time. Are there any shortcuts?

Baby, flowers, and windIn some cases, it may be feasible to have a hair dryer at the changing table, which can cut down drying time immensely! But a hair dryer is only appropriate if it has a COLD setting. And before you use the HIGH air setting, remember what it feels like to get windburn. Babies can get windburn–dried out, damaged skin–just from excessive airflow. So set that hair dryer to LOW. NEVER use hot air on baby’s very tender skin, as this can cause serious burns very, very quickly!

For an on-the-go solution, we have put personal battery-operated fans in our diaper bags to help reduce the time it takes to air dry completely.

What do I do if we have an adverse reaction to Tender Defender?

Daisy field against the sunThough rare, there will always be a small percentage of the population that is sensitive to any natural product, even aloe! (The thought of this makes us weep!) If you or your baby have had skin sensitivities in the past, the best places to try a new product are the soles of the feet or forearm. If this, or any other product, seems to create redness and irritation, flush the area thoroughly with water and consult your pediatrician or dermatologist.

Directions for Using Tender Defender

These directions are very important! Each step has its value.

Tender Defender Directions

Directions for using Tender Defender

  1. First, gently cleanse. Babies with very sensitive skin or sudden diaper rash that may be caused by environmental factors (diapers or wipes themselves) may do best with just a warm, wet washcloth.
  2. Apply a small amount of Tender Defender.
  3. Gently massage the Tender Defender into the entire affected area. For more serious rashes, especially those with significant fungal infection, the affected area may extend to the legs and torso. Use your hands to inspect the skin gently and reassure your baby that you love him and are taking the best care of him that you can!
  4. Completely air dry. It is important to provide the skin with as much air as possible! Your pediatrician may recommend diaper-free times each day. During these times, the baby’s skin is getting much-needed exposure to fresh air. You can give a dose of that fresh air between diaper changes! This is also important because leaving any moisture behind may feed the microbes we are trying to wipe out! And using plant-based powders to dry the area provides the microbes with yummy starches to eat. Air dry! Some parents use hair dryers that have a COLD setting. Never use hot air to dry baby’s skin!!
  5. Apply your favorite barrier cream, ointment, or paste. This step seals in the now-aired skin with a nutritive base coat and keeps the diaper environment from doing too much further damage to the skin. When using cloth diapers, you may want to use liners to protect the cloth from ointment buildup until the rash clears. We encourage you to try natural products that are free from petrolatum, mineral oils, boric acid, “fragrance” (which can mean a whole host of things!), or non-purified lanolin. When in doubt, if you can’t identify the first four or five ingredients as safe, look it up on EWG’s Skin Deep Diaper Cream database.

We recommend that you use Tender Defender at least twice a day to support skin’s good health when there is no rash. Use it at every other diaper change (or more) when there is an active rash. Be aware that the gingerols increase blood flow to the tissue, so your baby may experience a warming sensation, especially if his rash is severe. If you are worried about a potential negative reaction, see your pediatrician immediately.

Cautions: Do not use this product if your baby has any known allergies to any of its ingredients. Always consult a pediatrician before using any product on broken skin. For external use only. Keep out of reach of children. Never use hot air to dry baby’s tender skin. If condition worsens, discontinue use and contact physician immediately.

What do we know about these botanicals? While we discuss here the findings of traditional western scientists, we must acknowledge that scientists would not know what to investigate if it weren’t for the knowledge of the indigenous people local to these amazing plants.

Aloe barbadensis

Aloe plantAloe has been used to treat physical maladies for centuries. Ancient Egyptians used it about 3,500 years ago, and evidence of its use in ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, India, and China shows a long history of its use across cultures. It has been ingested and used externally to treat indigestion, stomach ulcers, immune deficiencies, cancer, aging, acne, wounds, burns, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, and countless other conditions. Scientists are working hard to understand its constituent parts and how they interact with our bodies and to what degree these historical uses of the plant have modern scientific merit.

Today, aloe farming, harvesting, and processing is a large industry with its own organizations, practices, and standards. We only accept organic aloe from suppliers who have the International Aloe Science Council’s certification and do extensive testing on their product to ensure bio-activity.

One of the distinctive features of our products is that we use concentrated aloe in our formulations. Why? The aloe vera layer promotes basal keratinocyte regeneration (skin cell healing). The more concentrated the aloe vera, the more vigorous the regeneration, and this is a linear relationship (Danhof & McAnalley, 1983). At a certain point, the aloe can and will irritate the skin, so we test extensively to find the sweet spot where we maximize the support for our skin’s regeneration and minimize irritation. However, even if the aloe initially irritates the skin, it is doing its job. During the formulation of this product, Aloe Baby’s founder had a large first degree burn from cooking, and she placed a dab of 10x (1000%) concentrate in the middle of the burn (it really irritated!), a dab of Tender Defender to one side, and nothing at all on the other side. The burn healed fastest in the middle and slowest where we applied nothing. While this was by no means a scientific study, it illustrates the importance of concentrating aloe for supporting skin healing.

Niaouli

Niaouli treeNot nearly as well-known in the United States or as well advertised worldwide, niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia) is a cousin to the Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia). There are some wonderful similarities between niaouli and tea tree:

  • Both are highly effective antibacterial agents, especially against Gram positive bacteria (Ramanoelina, Terrom, Bianchini & Coulanges, 1987).
  • The essential oils of both plants contain the Terpinen-4-ol, which is an effective antimicrobial against Staphylococcus aureus (Carson, Mee & Riley, 2002).
  • They share many of the same bio-active properties, acting as effective fungicides against dermatophytes and filamentous fungi (Hammer, Carson & Riley, 2002). And the tea tree has demonstrated antiprotozoal, antiviral, antibiotic, antimicrobial, and anti-infammatory qualities (Carson, Hammer & Riley, 2006), and it is likely that the less well-studied niaouli shares these attributes.

But there are two things that separate the essential oils of tea tree and niaouli:

  • Scent! The tea tree has a very medicinal quality to it, but niaouli has a much sweeter, fresher profile. (Who wants to smell like a medicine cabinet?)
  • The amount of a notorious skin irritant! 1,8-cineole is a compound that is present in significant amounts in this family of plants. It is a skin irritant that should be minimized in products to be used on sensitive skin. We found a specific chemotype of niaouli essential oil that is unique in its family: it contains far less 1,8-cineole than tea tree oil and even  significantly less than the oils of other niaouli chemotypes (Gbenou, Moudachirou, Chalchat & Figueredo, 2007; Ramanoelina, Bianchini & Gaydou, 2008). In other words, the oil we use is well researched and chosen for its efficacy and gentleness. As an added bonus, its collection and processing provides living wages for residents of a village in Madagascar.

Rosehip Seed Oil

rose hipsRosehip seed oil is a wonderful source of Vitamins A (retinol), C (ascorbic acid), and E (alpha and gamma tocopherols). But it is the levels of linoleic and linolenic acids, up to 77% of the oil, that is most beneficial for skin. Neither of these fatty acids are made by our bodies. Linoleic acid is an omega-6 fatty acid is critically important to skin, particularly for wound healing. Alpha Linolenic (also written as α-Linolenic) acid is an omega-3 fatty acid that reduces inflammation and promotes healing.

Rosehip seed oil used cosmetically has been demonstrated to reduce the depth of wrinkles, attenuate scarring, and regenerate skin (Pareja & Kehl, 1990). It has been shown to aid in wound healing for post-surgical and skin ulcer patients (Moreno, Bueno, Navas & Camacho, 1990). It is also used to ease the effects of radiotherapy on skin (Maddocks-Jennings,Wilkinson, & Shillington, 2005).

The unrefined cold-pressed rosehip seed oil that we use is sustainably wildcrafted and contains more linoleic acid than oil extracted with solvents or enzymes.
